Memorial Day started out as a day to honor those who had died in the Civil War, starting in 1868. At the time, they called it Decoration Day, and many went to honor their loved ones who died in battle. They would go to their grave sites, honoring their loved ones by decorating it with flowers. In 1971, Memorial Day was established as a national holiday. Since 1868, Americans have spent time on Memorial Day to remember their loved ones who have died in service. Many men and women have fought hard for our country, to protect us from outside evils and keep our families and communities safe. These men and women have had the courage to stand firm in the battle, and some have died in the process. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who have gone before us in the battle of freedom. May we not forget the men and women have served and died for all.
Around the country Americans will gather this weekend to honor their loved ones who have gone before them and celebrate the freedoms they have in America. From parades to BBQs, you’ll be sure to find some fun around. Most people will have work on Monday, May 27 to take the day to rest, remember, and visit their loved one’s graves. During this time, may we remember who has gone before. The sacrifices men and women and their families have made. The ones who have died in battle, feeling a duty to their family members back home, and brothers and sisters in the field who are fighting alongside them. War can be a difficult topic to discuss, but one thing is certain, many who join the armed forces do so with a mission to fight and protect the land they were born and raised in.
The Beresford Farmers Market stands with our fallen soldiers, and we are encouraged by their bravery. Please join us Saturday, May 25 for our kickoff event at Bulow Park in Beresford. In honor of those who have died we are giving first responders and veterans free zebra donuts from Centerville. We are also having our first annual smoked meat competition and will have vendors set up from 10am until 1pm. Please come to the park to enjoy the nice day outdoors, the fellowship of community, good food, and music. We look forward to seeing you!
Enjoy your time of rest on Monday and remember those who have fought for our country since its beginning. The ones who have died, the families who have lost, and the community that gains a sense of freedom, knowing they are protected. May your communities come together in fellowship, enjoying each other’s company, knowing full well that once upon a time people had rations of food, have been scared to walk down the street, or couldn’t sleep hearing the sound of missiles and guns going off constantly. It is a sense of peace that we have, so undeserved, but because of others sacrifices and for that, we will stand with our fallen soldiers and give thanks this day.
